Film review | Sweeney Todd

Hello lovelies,
I'm reviewing this excellent Tim Burton film, Sweeney Todd today and I can't wait to share my thoughts on the film with you all. I had never really been interested in seeing this film/play because I just thought it was a very long musical. That sounds terrible but our school did the musical and well, it sort of ruins it when you see a bunch of school children ruin all the songs (No offence). Even though this is an 18, I first watched this when I was about 15. I watch so many horror films that blood and guts don't really phase me in films anymore.

Here's what it says IMDb about Sweeney Todd "In the Victorian London, the barber Benjamin Barker is married to the gorgeous Lucy and they have a lovely child, Johanna. The beauty of Lucy attracts the attention of the corrupt Judge Turpin, who falsely accuses the barber of a crime that he did not commit and abuses Lucy later after gaining custody of her. After fifteen years in exile, Benjamin returns to London under the new identity of Sweeney Todd, seeking revenge against Turpin. He meets the widow Mrs. Lovett who is the owner of a meat pie shop who tells him that Lucy swallowed arsenic many years ago, and Turpin assigned himself tutor of Johanna. He opens a barber shop above her store, initiating a crime rampage against those who made him suffer and lose his beloved family."

I think even though this film is filled with violence, I still really love it. I just think its an excellent story an I like the relationship between Sweeney Todd and Mrs Lovett. One of the main reasons I watched this film was to see Johnny Depp and Helena Bonham Carter. I love them both for their acting and I especially love them together in films. Mixed with great onscreen chemistry and brilliant script writing, the pair really bring the film to life. Its safe to safe they I wouldn't even eat from Mrs Lovetts pie shop but the musical numbers between the pair are phenomenal.

My favourite songs from the film are; Not while I'm around, No place like London and worst pies in London. I just love the lyrics and I just love how well written and sung they are. The one thing that really puts me off this film is that apparently this is based on a true story. I never knew this but I was quite shocked. I love the film but if its true then its horrible to think that this actually happened. Its on thing to see it happen on screen but when it connects to peoples lives it become even more gory. Like I said, apparently this is a true story but even if its not is it still bad that I think this is an incredible film. I would go and watch this at the theatre to see how the movie and the show compare. I don't think it will be as good as it won't have two of the worlds greatest performers in it, but I would like to watch it and see.
