Should women have to pay tax on feminine hygiene products?

I think most of my readers are female and that's why I wanted to write this post, if you're male then you might not really be interested in this post (I'll be discussing women's hygiene products). So this is a little bit of a rant about something I read. In the UK and I think in other countries we have to pay tax on feminine hygiene products, so towels, tampon's and other things that us girls need, and I don't really think this is fair.

According to the news we pay 5% tax on these products and in the UK they are in the category "non-essential luxury items", now read that again just so we can all be clear on what the HM Revenue and Customs (HMRC) categorises these products as. I think its clear that who ever was in charge of categorisation that day, was a man. Its ridiculous that they are classed as non essential considering ever girl and woman is going to need these at some point, they are essential to all women. Luxury item, now here is one definition of the word luxury -  Something that is not essential but provides pleasure and comfort. I don't know about you but I wouldn't say tampons and towels are the most comfortable this us girls want to use, also I would hardly say its a pleasure to have to wear them. I understand that most things have a tax added on but do you really think its fair that we have to pay extra for something we need, I know its not a lot but the money us girls could save could go towards a luxury item that we want during that time of the money, like chocolates or something to make us feel less crappy.

I know this was a bit of a weird post but I just found it really annoying, I think if any man went through it then they would see that its not some magical time filled with sunshine and rainbows, its actually pretty painful and you don't really want to do anything. One last thing, do any of you girls find it really funny how adverts for brands like always show women going on wearing white jeans, roller blading near the beach. I don't know about you but when its my time of the month I stick to dark clothes and you certainly wouldn't catch me on roller blades.

I know most of you probably didn't want to read about that but I felt that as a woman I had a right to complain, I would love to hear your thoughts on this. Is there a tax on the products in your county, let me know in the comments as I would love to hear your opinions.

Bye for now xxx
